Run Like Blazes A Memoir eBook Roger Boylan
Having recently written a review of his "Great Pint-Pulling Contest" I can only ditto those remarks regarding his "Memoir". He is an exceptional writer, drawing on a wealth of life experience having lived in Ireland, Europe, and, having always been an "American Citizen". Even in his "Memoir" here he admits he was born an American citizen and was asked to leave England when they found out he was living there without a long term form of VISA. He so much prides himself as a true Irishman, as do we all who are of Irish decent, that I believe he has come to think he is a Native born Irishman. His short bio on the back cover says he is "Now an Americans Citizen". As far as I know he has always been an American citizen as he himself states in his "Memoir", born to parents who were born in the U.S. of A. as well of Irish born parents. He lived in Ireland and Europe for many years and is obviously multilingual. From his writing you can see he is Irish to his soul. His credits by others that liken him to other famous Native Irish authors is well deserved. The only thing one has to get used to is having one's iTouch or iPhone handy to the Oxford Dictionary App or punch the Kindle buttons to go to the Oxford Dictionary to find out what the word or words mean, many of them of Old World origin. I find this tedious, but, I also find it helping me grow my vocabulary (especially for new words that go back many Centuries), a kind of chore but worth the effort. Again, there is humor in much of what he writes, plus, a surgical satire along with the wit that is truly entertaining. I recommend all read him, especially all us "Irish". Apparently he has published a book in German that I cannot find in Amazon or elsewhere.Product details

Run Like Blazes A Memoir eBook Roger Boylan Reviews
I have long been a great fan of Boylan's lit crit articles (Boston Review, New York Times, The Economist's Intelligent Life...) and a somewhat lesser fan of his fiction. When I discovered earlier this week that he had (already at his tender age) written his memoirs, I downloaded them to my with a pleasant sense of anticipation and not a little trepidation.
I was delighted with what I found. Boylan's apprenticeship as a writer - his alcohol-hazed memories of a life slowly spiralling downwards - in 1960s and 70s Western Europe is well and amusingly told. His nostalgic evocation of an era (a time now as distant from us as the 1920s Paris of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Joyce, Orwell et al was from the 60s/70s) and the vignettes from his hapless odyssey through it are superbly crafted. But it is his description of his early years in New York - having been expelled from his cultural homeland because he only had a US passport - that, for me, is the poignant highpoint of the tale (and the lowpoint of his journey).
This is Boylan's best fiction yet. More in a similar vein, please, Roger.
Roger Boylan evokes the thrill and confusion of growing up an international nomad, with many countries but no real home, and the way in which that plays out in the life of an adolescent and young adult trying to make sense of the world and of life. Much too much beer, but luckily also lots of literature to take him by the hand. Looking for the sequel.
A lovely, funny, deeply entertaining memoir of an often misspent youth. Well done.
